A new research paper led by Jackson Rapala from Teresa O’Meara’s group has been published in Nature Communications. We used cutting-edge homology detection methods based on structure to identify a rapidly evolving proteasome chaperone that previously evaded detection; we then used the principles learned about structure-function to make a de novo protein capable of carrying out similar functions in the cell!
